Overview

Affordable, Quality Housing

The Territory is experiencing high levels of growth. Even though we are affected by the current contracting world economy and the slowing economy nationally, we are experiencing economic and population growth right across the Territory. That means more people want more houses.

Housing expansion is not matching demand, resulting in too few places to buy and rent and prices getting out of the reach of lower to middle income Territorians.

This is having an impact on Territorians and our growth and expansion. The Government is determined to ensure that there is more affordable housing available to buy and to rent.

The Housing the Territory information sheets provide information on our housing framework, new government policies and the action we are taking to provide more homes.

What we are doing and how

Housing the Territory is a comprehensive package aimed at getting the balance of housing in the Territory right. It has four elements:

Land to Grow

A land release program right across the Territory, providing space for people to live.

New Places to Buy

Building affordable homes for people to buy and helping people get into their first home.

New Places to Rent

Growing the rental market for those who cannot afford to buy yet.

New Public Housing

Expanding the number of public houses for those Territorians who will need the Government to provide housing and reforming the way we deliver public housing.

This framework is driving Government action on housing. These information sheets outline the first step the Territory Government is undertaking in a program of housing reform and growth for Territorians.
